چکیده

We have developed an averaging picosecond x-ray streak camera using a dc-biased photoconductive switch as a generator of a high-voltage ramp. The streak camera is operated at a sweep speed of up to 8 ps/mm, shot-to-shot jitter is less than 61 ps. The streak camera has been used to measure the time history of broadband x-ray emission from an ultrashort pulse laser-produced plasma. Accumulation of the streaked x-ray signals significantly improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the data obtained. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~96!02803-0#

A sub-picosecond accumulating streak camera for x-rays

An x-ray streak camera system uses a laser triggered photo-conductive switch to synchronize the high voltage ramp applied to its sweep plates to the photo-excitation of a sample. This technique allows the jitter between successive sweeps to be kept below 100 fs compared to over 1 ps using classical methods. By accumulating a stable pulsed x-ray signal over many sweeps, a very high dynamic range...

Ultrafast x-ray diffraction using a streak-camera detector in averaging mode.

We demonstrate an apparatus for measuring time-dependent x-ray diffraction. X-ray pulses from a synchrotron are diffracted by a pair of Si(111) crystals and detected with an x-ray streak camera that has single-shot resolution of better than 1 ps. The streak camera is driven by a photoconductive switch, which is triggered by 100-fs laser pulses at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The laser and the st...

Ultrafast, jitter-free x-ray streak camera that uses single-photon counting.

A novel method developed to increase the temporal resolution of x-ray streak cameras is described. The method is analogous to the time-correlated single-photon-counting technique, which is commonly used in atomic physics. By use of short-pulse x-ray radiation from a laser-produced plasma, generated by an ultrafast laser, it is shown that a standard x-ray streak camera with a nominal temporal re...

Laser and synchrotron radiation pump–probe x-ray diffraction experiments

Recent developments have allowed x-ray diffraction techniques at synchrotron radiation facilities to be employed with a temporal resolution of around 1 ps. These developments are the availability of firstly, high brightness third-generation x-ray sources, secondly, passively mode-locked lasers with 100 fs temporal duration and thirdly, averaging streak cameras with sub-picosecond temporal resol...

Pressure Ionization and Line Merging in Strongly Coupled Plasmas Produced by 100-fs Laser Pulses

Timeand space-resolved extreme ultraviolet spectra of carbon plasmas, created with 100-fs laser pulses, are obtained with the novel technique of picosecond jitter-free streak-camera averaging. Spectroscopic diagnostics indicate electron densities and temperatures evolving from 1023 to 1021 cm23 and 80 to 50 eV, respectively, implying less than one particle in a Debye sphere at early times. The ...
